A new hobby shop in Illinois

With so many “another one bites the dust” type postings in these forums about local hobby shops it seems appropriate to mention a new one being opened. Green River Hobbies is in Geneseo IL – that is on hywy 6 in north western Illinois, along the tracks of the former Rock Island, now Iowa Interstate, and soon to be a passenger line again if current plans hold up. In other words, while Geneseo is hardly a major metropolitan area there are railfanning reasons to be there, or to be close by (a short drive from the Quad Cities for example). I patronized their booth at this last weekend’s Quad Cities train show. I wish them luck and hope to patronize them again soon.

grhobbies.com is their website

That is good news any time that a new model railroad shop opens nowadays.

But, I gotta tell ya, Geneseo Illinois is in the middle of nowhere.

It will be difficult to draw a lot of customers.

This isn’t, by any chance, an April Fool’s gag, is it ?

A new hobby shop opening anywhere today is good news, even if it is so far away that I’ll never go there.

Many years ago, before the owner passed away, the best hobby shop in Arizona was way out in the middle of nowhere, in a place called Arizona City, about halfway between Tucson and Phoenix.

Nope, not a gag… Green River Hobbies is real! In fact, I have been there several times and can say that the owners are friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help. I wish them well and much success!

Yikes! That’s right down the road. I’ll have to drive over some weekend to check them out.
