ABC's of Building Model Railroad Cars

I just purchased the book ABC’s of Building Model Railroad Cars by Wayne Wesolowski from amazon.com. I’ve been wanting to tackle the process of scratch building for awhile and haven’t had a clue where to start. I figure I’ll begin with a T&P Muley Caboose and go from there. Does anyone know anything about this book, or the Author?

I have had the honor to view his Lincoln Funeral Train at the Illinois Benedictine College library. The 15 foot model took Dr.

By profession, Wayne is a chemistry prof at the University of Arizona and one of the country’s pre-eminent model builders, known far and wide among the hobby’s craftsmen elite. Although his name hasn’t appeared in the pages of MR in some time, he did contribute numerous model building articles of extremely high calibur to that and other hobby magazines over the years. I would say that your book is likely one of the most authoritative introductory texts available on the subject.

Thank you for your replies Neutrino and CNJ. I’m amazed that I managed to find a book of this calibre on my first attempt. I’m excited to get it and start building.

I second that! His books and articles are the bible for us scratchbuilders.

I have several books by Wayne Wesolowski plus a video ‘The Basics of Model Railroading’ that I picked up back in the 80’s. I had ‘The ABC’s of Building Model Railroad Cars’ at one time. It ended up getting stolen.

Jeff, will the book be able to help get me started in my scratch building endeavors or is it a book geared more towards the advanced modeler?

It will definately help you. Most of the projects are easy to moderate and are easy to understand. Materials and tools are quite basic also. You’ll really enjoy it.

Doesn’t he have a book on building structures as well?

I believe he does, but I’m not familiar with it. I watched one of his videos one time on building model railroad wood structures. It was very informative. It may still be available from Kalbach Video.
