AC6000 Question?

How many CSX and UP AC6000’s are still rated at 6000HP? If you know, Can you please give the numbers of the Engines along with how many are still in service with 6000HP? - Example of what I mean by the numbers of the Engines is like - CSX 5000 Dversity, CSX 613 and so on. I hope you understand what I’m saying here.

All of the CSX AC6000CWs are rated at 6000hp, except for 699 which received a 4390hp motor following a catastrophic engine failure. About 12 UP AC6000CWs are still rated at 6000hp. All that are numbered in the 75xx series. The majority have been rebuilt with the 4390hp diesel and been renumbered into the 69xx series.

actually all 117 CSX AC6000CW’s are rated at 6000hp again. CSX #699 recieved its new GEVO16 a little over a year ago. I shot it on 1-18-09 and have closeup shots of the dual exhuast stacks, still barely scorched at the time.

Why hello there Wrawroacx,

The GE AC6000CW diesel electric locomotives happen to be my favorite units. I’m currently happy because I’ve notice that they’ve been returning to service. The 697, 680, 627 and 647 have been roaming the general area on trains such as Q108, Q109, Q110, Q117 and Q111. Now, whether all of the units are out of storage, I do not know, but I’m happy enough with these select few. Unfortunately, some are receiving irritating new FRA-approved horns, but there are a couple that still have their original sound. It’s NICE to hear that whine again!

Also, every CSX unit in the 600-699 and 5000-5016 number series (that’s every AC6000CW unit that CSX owns) is still rated at 6,000 hp. However, UP is a whole different ballgame. They have derated quite a few of their AC6000CW’s down to 4,400 hp. These units now have the designation AC44/60CW. Personally, I am a fan of the CSX ones!

Thanks for the info Rich. This helps a lot. Also, I like the video of the CSX AC6000 west of Berea at Highspeeds you got last week. By the way, I didn’t know CSX goes that high of speed west of Berea on that Track he was on. Did they increase the speed of the Track through there or is it still the same? Also, real soon I might possibly have a YouTube account aswell and will have some great videos from Berea and other locations in Ohio and PA. Keep on the look out.

In the case of the UP AC6000CW’s, they have not been derated but are actually being repowered with FDL prime movers. Saying that they are derated would merely indicate that the units retain the HDL primemover but the horsepower reduced and that is not the case. The CSX units (except #699 which did have an FDL prime mover installed) were indeed derated to 4400-4700hp for a time while issues related to the connecting rods were addressed. The derating was accomlished via software changes and the units retained the HDL prime movers and once issues were resolved the units returned to the 6000hp rating.

Not all of CSX’s are at 6000hp. CSX 600 and 601 are now rated at 4400hp.

Actually 600-602 … the orignal CW60’s have been redesignated as CW44’s
