Well, I visited the main page of the Trains.com website, and much to my delight, Classic Trains has an article about steam turbines, as well as a few online goodies. Then I saw they were videos, and you know what? When I hit “download”, it doesn’t get past 10%!
Can anyone tell me what’s the problem? I’ve never seen any video from this website!
(yes, I know I’ve ranted about this before)

Possible solution:
Click on IE Tools
Empty Temp Internet Files cache
Increase the size of your Temp File Folder- make it larger
Might work, assuming you are using Windows IE to browse.

Same thing here. This is like the 4th time I mentioned it. Goes to 10%, then…nothing. Arrrrrrrrrrrrr! I’m missing out on so much footage!
What type of connection to the internet do you have? Dial up is almost too slow these days for audio and video downloads.
I had DSL once. I got rid of it.
They advertised up to 50 times faster. IT WASN’T.
They advertised always on. It wasn’t.
There was no tec support after midnight.
During the day when you called for tec support you could litterally wait hours.
I was totally without DSL service for 3 weeks, they didn’t care.
It would not let me on during the day. Then when I came home after midnight it would work.
If I scheduled them for home service, they would not show up.
If I called for tec support many times I received a message that basically said they were helping so many other people that they would not have time to help me.
And if all that wasn’t bad enough, they even wanted to increase the cost of my so called “Service”.
Only when I cancelled my “service” did they seem to care. And by then it was toooo late.
I know many people do have DSL or Cable now. But the price is not worth the hastle and the service isn’t there. So websites need to consider those of us who do have dial up and make it so we can enjoy their site. And that is my 2 cents worth.
if you are using a dial up modem i suspect it is too slow to handle video, at least that is my experience je new zealad
I used to be able to do it with no problem ( I have dial-up), but know all of a sudden I can’t! I really wanted to see video of that SP Cab Forward!

How do you “Empty Temp Internet Files cache”. Maybe that’s my problem?
On top of your screen you see File /Edit /View /Favourites /Tools?
Click on Tools
Then click Internet Options
Then click General tab at the top
Then in the middle of the Temp Internet Files box, click on Delete Files
Then click on Settings (in the same box as above) and increase the amount you want to allow. I have mine set for 500MB and that seems adequate.

I stayed with friends when my wife and I separated. They had SBC/Yahoo DSL. It was slow starting up from cold-boot (about 2 minutes), but once on, I was typically getting 500k-1Mb/sec downloads. I’d download 2-3 meg videos in 5-6 seconds tops. Never had a problem in that month I was there. I’d like to get it, but there’s always that “for the first 6 months” hook. Makes me wonder what month 7 will charge at?
I use Netscape to surf and don’t typically have problems downloading videos even at 56k. It just takes forever and a day.
You realize that your experience was only with one service provider? As long as you have the same provider for both local and long distance telephone service, you can use any DSL service provider that services your area. They have varying qualities. Spend some time at www.dslreports.com for what’s available in your area and their respective service qualities.
Why do you have to have the same local/long distance provider? Because your copper can only have one leaseholder, meaning that if you have Verizon for your local service (who owns the copper) and MCI for your long distance, then MCI’s name is on the copper as the sole leaseholder. They can’t “lease” it to Yahoo DSL or anybody else. Stupid, but the way it is.
Sorry you’ve had such bad experiences. I’d kill for broadband…
DSL varies.
I have 3.5Mb DSL, statically mapped (Not PPPoE) from MCI. Dial is about 8KB/sec download. My DSL will do over 300KB/s download. Latency on dial is 40-60ms, DSL is 4-6ms. This is easily over 50x the performance of Dial, and mine is always on. In fact I acheive 99.99% uptime most months, and have hit 99.999% uptime a couple of times. This is easily as good uptime as your average T1, and nearly a match for most OC grade circuits. MTTR however is 48 hours, which pales before a T1’s 4 hour MTTR from the major telcos here in Ontario.

I too hae always had this problem sense I joined. I can view videos and such on other sites, but here it doesn’t get past 10%. I don’t even bother trying anymore. I do have dial up. It can get depressing when there’s a video you really want to see but you can’t. Oh well…

As always you get what you pay for. If you don’t get what you want go elsewhere. There are plaenty of suppliers out there. Soundsike you were getting a cheap rate from an undeveloped company. Cable moderm is the way to go.

Or for that matter average Canadian costs for Boradband. We’ve got legislated $40 broadband (Base tier must be no more than $39.99) here in Canada. That’s usually 1.5Mb down/256Kb up though.
