Project Statement
This problem statement assumes you are one of the project engineers on a construction project during the bidding phase where 20,000 railroad crossties are to be installed on an elevated structure. The crossties are for refurbishing the roadbed and conversion of the mass transportation system to be fully automated, without locomotive or conductor service personnel on the train. Each crosstie has anchors to attach the tie to the supporting structure, rail-seat anchors, and service/utility anchors to support power and communications equipment. In total the following table shows the anchors that could be placed in each tie. However, special ties can be fabricated with reduced number of anchors if all ties are not identical.
