Adhesives for cork roadbed and track ?

Tomorrow I hope to start putting down the cork roadbed, I have a couple of tubes of the white latex adhesive caulk and I wanted to check and see if this is the right way to go. I also would like to know just how far in from the edge of the bench work should I keep the track? I was thinking 2" on center, is this far enough in?

Thank You

Ron

Hi Ron

On the facia (front edge or viewing side) side I would make that around 3" to 4". As for the rest of your layout, if you have something in place to keep your rolling stock from doing a swan dive to the floor. Get as close as you like. Just remember to fill out the accident report when you hit something. lol

PS. I find an old bank card is just right for spreading out the silicon An 1/8th inch thick line is what I use. It spreads out really nice and wide.

Last Note: Wear something you can throw away, ask you wife if she has a extra bottle of nail polish remover around. If caught early clean up is a breeze. But wait too long and its a real pain. Have a few rolls of paper towels handy.

I have a small layout that the tracks come close to the edge. I am going to put up a plexiglass safety fence around the edges. You can see how to put one on your layout by going to Videos (above) then Expert Tips. It is removeable for when you want to work on your layout. It not only prevents train dives, but also direct attack from little fingers.

Good luck,

Richard

Hey Johnny-Reb and Cowman,

Just wanted to thank you both for taking the time to look and to reply, I was wondering if maybe the text on this thread had vanished and maybe everyone was just seeing a blank page.

I put down some roadbed the other day, just a couple of pieces to see how good the caulk worked, and I am very happy with the results, the last time I put down cork we were still using track nails. I hate to admit it but I have a whole bunch of those electronic motel key cards from when I was on the road haulin Nissan,s so I have plenty of spreaders. Thanks Johnny-Reb, dont believe in credit cards so I dont have any of those laying around.

I also happen to have a 2’ X 8’ piece of clear plexiglas up in the work shop, left there by the owner of the property we are renting, and he has given me all materials he left from his custom door and cabinet shop he used to operate here. So I have that covered, Thank You for the tip Cowman.
