Can anyone tell me the best adhesives to use to build walther’s kits with. I have built several kits and i’m not happy with the results i’m getting.
I use testors plastic cement that comes in the red tube for my kits. I havent a walthers yet, though, but I hope this helps. -beegle55.
I’m assuming you’re talking about plastic buildings. My favorite for longer joints, such as walls, is Plastruct’s Plastic Weld. For smaller joints, especially window “glass,” I use Tenax.
Are you having problems with the cement holding, or is there another problem with construction?
May not be what you are asking, but don’t put the glue on the model. Put it on a piece of paper. Then transfer a little with a tooth pick or micro brush to the model. It takes much longer but cuts down on the drips and spills. This works with all the glues, tube, bottle, CA, wood, all.
I use Faller or Vollmer (I suspect they’re the same formulation but not sure). They have very fine delivery nozzles and are also quite strong. In fact the delivery nozzles are so fine that they clog up. I defeat this by using a piece of very fine brass wire to cap them while not in use. The Tenax is useful gluing long edges but only if you are able to mechanically clamp or fasten the parts during the application and set-up, also it has a short shelf life once opened as it evaporate no matter how tightly once tries to close the cap. But having said that, there really isn’t much wrong with the Testors that comes with a fine applicator tip.
Im hooked on model master liquid cement. It comes in a wierd shaped black bottle with a very fine applicator tip and you can apply it right to the model easily as the strange shape of the bottle fits comfortably in your hand. Oh, and unlike the testors stuff, no strings![:)]
For those having clogging problems w/ the thin needles like on Faller, I find that squeezing the bottle to blow out the tube will keep it clear even during long sessions of building. Sometimes the thin brass needs to be used or if really clogged just heat the needle w/ a match or lighter.
Yes i’m having problems with the cement holding. i would like to have something that is a nice balance between fast drying and strong.
Hi Bob K.,
To clarify, the clogging-up that I refer to, only occurs between gluing sessions, not during gluing sessions. And yes, using a lighter to heat the tube also works but is slightly dangerous, and for me less convenient than simply keeping the tube capped with a brass wire.
