AHM Alco 1000 repower

This may seem to be a silly question to some of you , but not to me . I had recently bought a few older AHM Alco 1000s with vertical motors . I have seen these before and I have had a few ever since . Now my question . Has anyone ever done a repower by removing the armature and magnets , and putting a sealed can motor in their place ? And if you did , what brand and size of motor ? They are beautiful locomotives , not broken as some would be , great paint jobs ( one is a PC unit ) , I rebuilt one of them and the motor runs great , due to some cleaning and filing the magnets , but the worm gear is shot . Any help would be appreciated .

I have tried on the rs3 that ahm has but could not find a motor that would fit in the old motor housing. I talked to a couple motor makers from ebay but they could not seem to find one for me that space.

Junk, I sent a PM to one of the masters here. If he cannot help you, well it is time for a new engine. Again [#welcome] to the site.

I’ve worked on one of these before. It took some time, but I eventually got it running well with the stock parts (I was tuning it up for its owner). The gearing is decent enough to run well with a better motor.

Forum member “SteamFreak” did this exact conversion a few years ago. I just checked, and he still has the pictures in his Photobucket account. As far as conversions go, this looks like an easier job than many others I’ve seen and done. If you ask him, I’m sure he’ll give you a walk-through.[:D]

Oh yeah, the motor used is a type FK-130SH by Mabuchi. They run nearly as well as Mashimas. You should be able to get them from Bowser (part #79. Not on their retail site, but I’m sure you can call or e-mail them).

The AHM Alco 1000 vaguely resembles an Alco S-2 circa 1943-1944. During those years S-2s were built with horizontal radiator shutters.

Darth , you are the greatest for helping out on this . That Alco 1000 has the same drive as mine does , and I wondered if anyone had done one up before . Thanks for all of this info , and Ill be sure to save it . Now all I need to do now is get a motor , and a worm gear . Im sure Ill find one somewhere .

Update : Since my last post about this AHM repowering issue , my complications have pretty much been resolved . I managed to take the motor apart , cleaned it , filed down the magnets to the proper spacing , added another spacer ring , found another worm gear ( friend gave me an entire powered truck assembly ) , then I re-assembled the motor . It runs well , running on DCC , starts at 10 scale mph , lower amperage draw , pulls cars very well . I will however at some point in time down the road install a can motor . Thank you to all who did and could help in any way .
