Like most of you I have every possible tool you need for MRR, but I dont have a air brush. I was wondering what brands to stay away from and if there are any types to stay away from. Just wanting some suggestions on wich to buy. Oh and compressors, I have a compressor, but would it be better to buy just a air tank with regulator to power the airbrush?
I have an old Badger 200 that I have had for 30 years now and it works like a champ. There are plenty of different name brands, but I would go for simple. I do intend to buy the next model up from mine so I can shoot more narrow lines. The 200 is fine for full spray, but lacks the ability to shoot finer lines. The main reason I want this feature is for shooting into corners and for weathering. It is not a must, but it is a nice option.
I use a Paasche H and VL set, I’ve had the H set for over 20 yrs. and it still works great. The H set is an external mix with 3 tips, #1 ,#2 and #3, [small, med. and large spray patterns], The VL is an internal mix and allows much finer line painting and weathering oppurtunities. Both of these brushes are excellent and I highly recommend them.
For a compressor, you need one with a tank, preferrably a 5 gal. tank, with a regulator and if you live in a moist climate, a moisture trap. A simple air tank won’t last very long and you’ll be constantly filling it, so a compressor with a tank on it is definitely the way to go.
One final thought on compressors, don’t get drawn into the idea that you have to have the ‘‘airbrush’’ compressor, these units may be quiet but they cost hundreds of dollars and most dont have any type of air tank much less a nice big 5 gal. one. A Campbell-Hausfield from your local WallyMart will work just fine for any type of brush and will only cost about $120.
