I was going to post this elsewhere but it seems to be a question that no one has asked before. I have a Paasche compressor that overheats and shuts down when it is used for maybe more than 20 minutes at a time. It is a 1/5 hp and I wonder if it is undersized after looking at some other products.
Any ideas?
HAROLDA,
My guess is,it does not have a storage tank and it runs all the time when using it,for a constant run compressor with low HP,the Motor,is protecting itself from overheating,my understanding is a lot of low HP compressor’s do that…Give Paasche a call, they are very helpful…
Cheers,
Frank
Thanks Frank,
There is a storage tank - just maybe it isn’t large enough so the compressor runs more than it should???
you say this happens when you use it for more than 20 minutes at a time.
is the compressor motor running constantly for 20 minutes?
if so, there is something wrong unless you inflating a truck tire with it… you should be able to work off the air in the reservoir with the motor just running now and then to replenish that.

When you compress air it gets very hot and it could be contributing to the compressors overheating. What is the duty cycle of the compressor? You should be able to work off the pressure in the reservoir so the compressor should not have to run that often.
Harold,
You don’t mention the capacity of the tank, normally it has a 120psi cap…and compressor stops, when that is reached…starts again at around 90 psi and stops again at 120psi…Should constantly continue that cycle, the larger the tank capacity, the longer the interval will be before it starts again…If you use 30lbs of air constantly,it will recycle a lot…Like I said the tank capacity has a lot to do with.it…If it does not want to do that some times, then it is getting too hot and the internal breaker is protecting the motor,by tripping, until it cools down,to start again…Call Paasche, customer service and explain, would be my advice…
Cheers,
Frank
Harold,
Read,Retsiganalmtr, post,He is correct, that little horse power motor,is working harder,to try and overcome the heated air,and it can’t,so it shuts down until it cools off…
Cheers,
Frank
Hello Harold,
Twenty minutes before overheating for the compressor that you’re describing sounds about right. A friend of mine uses a Paasche unit for small airbrush projects and hers shuts down after approximately 15 minutes of continuous use (with the motor starting on/off). This is normal.
But are you painting multiple models or large units? Just curious because, typically, if you’re performing a big or well involved weathering/paint job it’s helpful to allow 5 to 10 minutes between coatings after the unit has been kicking on/off for 10 minutes. This may help the unit cool down enough where you won’t have to worry about the built in overload relay shutting your unit down.
An option to consider would be to add a 1 or 2 gallon auxiliary tank to your compressor. Although, initially, your unit will run longer to build up the air, you would likely have more than enough to get a lot done before the unit starts up again. This may solve the overheating annoyance.
