I am really keen on knowing whether crossby air whistles found on Norfolk and western LC1and LC2s,Virginian railroad el1a,el3a class,New haven electric locomotives ef1,ef2,ep1,ep2,ep3,Prr FF1, were of 2mm diameter or not as someone suggested that crossby produced air versions of their steam variants only with this diameter or were there other diameters as well. And why the whistles seen on New York central electrics s motors,t motors resembled crossby (the modern variant) but had 5 inch diameter and new york central shops manufactured them as noted by a person who posted videos on youtube. In the same way why clarion whistles seen on sacramento northern steeplecab 653 sound exactly like wabco clarion whistles although the website mentions they were General Electric and vice versa is it due to the fact that ge and wabco had agreements to manufacture clarion and trombone whistles exactly similar to each other the only difference being that ge clarion whistles were vertically mounted and the westinghouse ones were horizontally mounted and whether the whistles on milw ep2 that were described by Noel Holley as high pitched and shrill european peanut were also made by GE and did they have sounds comparable to air whistles found on european electric locomotives during the steam era.And any other manufacturer other than crossby which produced air whistles that resembled steam whistles in appaearance and mimicked their sound although not exactly but to some extent.
If you spell ‘Crosby’ correctly, you will find Crosby-steam.com and Craig Bliss, who maintains the historical archive of Crosby information and drawings. That would be a logical starting point if you haven’t already contacted him.
I can’t thank you enough for sharing this information,by the way can you tell whether if I email Craig Bliss will he answer my questions or not
I don’t have an answer to that, and I don’t have a recent confirmed e-mail for him. It seems he had replied to a variety of inquiries from the RyPN preservation community.
However I can’t register on rypn so how do I reach out to him.
I don’t know how long it’s going to take RyPN to recover from their little Internet disaster – I can’t log on, either, without having staff reset permissions… and there is no way to contact them without being logged in.
While it would be nice to ask directly what Mr. Bliss’s current contact information is, or get a more personal introduction to him via RyPN, I think it should be possible to get in contact with a little “diligence”. I would keep your initial question reserved, though, to the one or two most important for you. Ask the rest after he knows you.
I hope they recover from that disaster quickly otherwise there doesn’t seem to be anyother way to get more information on this.
can anyone tell me whether crosby whistles for air use were of 2 inch diameter only or not.
The choice of diameter was up to the purchaser. I’ve found sizes ranging from 1" to 10".
