Airbrushing for Scale Modelers
I think Aaron did an excellent job on covering ALL the aspects of Airbrushing. I am new to this part of the hobby so I think this is a perfect guide to not only help me with my Ab techniques but also with my model building ability. Well worth the money, and will always be in my model building library as a reference and guide.
I read through the airbrushing basics portion of the book. It contains good ideas but most are contained in passed issues of Fine Scale Modeler magazine. The chapters I read did not cover my problem with acrylic airbrushing finishes that are easily pulled up by tape and poster putty. While it mentioned silly putty it did mention the problems you can have with it sicking to paper or cloth or being distorted by being touched by the modeler. The book did not mention parafilm that I have to use for masking so the paint is not pulled up. For large areas that require a straight line, I cut a strip of parafilm with a straight edge and a
#11 blade, apply it to the area that must be straight and overlap it with a strip of silly putty. The putty sticks to the parafilm and to the plastic bag cutouts that are used to mask the remainder of the area. I have had great success with this method. I only gave the book 4 stars because the basics chapters were not comprehensive enough and I learned if you cannot overcome basic problems, the good ideas in the remainder of the book are unattainable.
Big thanks to Aaron, very well written. I’ve been airbrushing for upwards of 50 years, quite familiar and comfortable, but I picked up several nuggets of very helpful information that I had not realized before. I hope at some point we’ll see one about paints in general, emphasis on acrylics, I still struggle a bit with that field of products. Excellent guide, well done.
Haven’t read too much yet, but coverage of airbrushes is really thorough as I expect of the remainder of the book.
This has become my go-to reference for airbrushing! Excellent explanations of the various airbrush and equipment options available to the scale modeler, and what they mean from a technical and real-life use standpoint. I wish I had this book when I started airbrushing, many years ago. It would have saved major aggravation and a lot of bad language (and some less than stellar model finishes). The book then goes into practical step-by-step applications for different modelling end uses. There is something there for everyone. The book is very well written, and the illustrations are fully up to FSM standards. Well worth the price!
Well written, helpful, been modeling a long time & still trying to learn, nice to see it confirm things I already practice, also learned some new ideas…
Very well written guide to Air Brushing techniques! I’d recommend it to any hobbyist who want to either learn how to Air Brush for the first time or the experienced painter looking to improve his/her modeling.
Highly Recommended!
Well written, I learned a lot from this issue. I would like to see more in the future.
