Alameda Corridor East (ACE) is finally under construction

Looks like the long awaited Alameda Corridor East (ACE) is finally under construction, I saw billboard signs up on San Gabriel Ave advertising the upcoming grade separation work, this is a big linchpin in the planned future of freight service here in Southern California. Considering how long the Alameda Corridor took to complete, looks like they have abandoned the idea of a trench all the way to Pomona and only a portion will be sunk through San Gabriel, the rest looks like improved grade crossings and double tracking the old Southern Pacific route all the way to Brea.

Methinks K.P. may be kept very busy the next few summers [;)]

Hello VSmith!

Actually, the ACE project has been going on for more than ten years. The process of eliminating grade crossings in an urban area takes a lot of time, money and politicking. Some grade separations and crossing improvements have been completed - the web site has a good summary.

Despite what the web site says, it is not clear to me how long this project will continue due to the remaining number of crossings. They are finally getting to some important ones on the double tracked Los Angeles sub. I wish they wouldn’t spend so much of my tax dollars on the low traffic Alhambra sub west of Pomona.
