Alaska GP38-GP40

Hi,I´m Christian from Germany,

Atlas offer a black GP40 but also a blue/yellow GP38 in Alaska Railroad. What does they different paint says ?Is this the era, passenger or freight or what?

Thanks in advance!

Different eras. The black with yellow stripes was standard up to 1976-77. After that the first blue & yellow scheme (big ALASKA lettering) was used from 1976-77 to 2007, then the new scheme on the SD70MACs. I may have those dates off by 1-2 years. There is lots of overlap between black & yellow and 1st blue and yellow scheme, and same today. There’s not a massive effort to repaint everything each time.

Some of the GP40-2s lasted into 2007 in the black and yellow.

They were repainted in the latest scheme at Horicon.

Lots of unique details on these.

The end plates were cut back a bit, and the steps are bolted right to the plow.
