Alclad2 - Update regarding New Formulas for stainless steel rail cars

Hi Crew,

I’ve communicated with Tony Hipp of Alclad2, ( alclad2.com ) regarding the status of the new basecoat color formulas for stainless steel rail passenger cars and am passing the info to you. The photos below, taken by Tony, show an HO shell with one of the finishes (medium aged). Really cool stuff!

Tony is knowledgeable about metals, has performed research as well as received input from modelers (myself included). He had planned to have the new formulas ready earlier this year and is not neglecting model railroaders. One of the new formulas needs a specific tint color, which he is working on obtaining. Rather than settling for a “second-best”, he wants to make certain that we won’t be disappointed as he is well aware what a tough crowd passenger rail modelers can be. ( Yes, myself included).

As far as I know, the new formulas will likely have the name “Streamliner” on them since most passenger car modelers are familiar with that term. The formulas are intended for all stainless steel rail cars, including the modern units from Bomardier and Kawasaki. The primary “goodie” of the new base color formulas is that they dry very quickly, compared to Scale Coat 2 and other paint brands which require time to dry and cure.

But in the meantime, those of you wanting to give Alclad2 a go can still have fun and do so with materials currently available on the market. Here is the link to

Wow!

That looks pretty good! I’m satisfied with my current work but perhaps I’ll use that for future projects that don’t stand a chance of being mixed in with equipment treated with the current formula that I’m using

Did he give any clue when the new paints might hit the market? [:P]

He couldn’t give a definite clue as he’s in the process of getting the specific tint chemical from a reliable vendor. He wants to release the new basecoat colors at the same time and not piece-meal it.

The new basecoat colors will be very similar to the basecoat colors that me and the other volunteer testers have been using on our passenger cars.

But guys, in the meantime while we wait you can still metalize your Budds, Pullman Standards, ACFs, and Bombardiers with what’s currently available on the market and get realistic, enjoyable results that will make you smile [8D].
