ALCO RS-3 NYNHH n.537 painting and modifications

Hi

I would like to ask 2 questions on the painting and modification of the unit N.537 RS-3 of the NH

1-This unit was delivered in 1952 in the original paint scheme and then re-painted in the New Image {McGinnes paint scheme] at later stage Is known that this loco was in the original livery until at least 1956 Does anybody on this forum knows when this loco was re-painted from the original paint scheme in to the New Image one or if it was still in the original paint scheme in the period 1957-1959 ?

2-Can anyone please tell me when this RS-3 units were modified from aircooler to watercooler resulting in the crosswise exhaust stack on the hood ?

Thanks very much in advance for your reply

I believe all alco rs3’s had there turbo chargers switched over, including the NH. This unit, part of the second order of rs3’s or NH class DERS-2c, numbers 537-546 were built in 1951, as delivered with a green cab, with green stripe on the bottom and one on top. In 1959, somes unit were re-built, then again in 1962. I don’t know when they started switching out turbos. My books show different units with them both ways. My only photos of 537 are in 1966 in the blk/orange scheme. Your best bet is ask on the NH historical site. Lots of knowledge there.

Hi M Horton
