Alcohol source?

No, not the kind you’re thinking. I’m looking for the 90% stuff for paint removal.

ask your druggist. (no not that kind). be aware that different solvents work better on some cars that on others. i use 91% alcohol on some lettering and ELO on other. i am not stripping the entire shell, just removing some numbers to change them.

I got some 99% at Target or Walmart, I don’t remember which.

I have, on occasion, been able to find it at Wal-Mart, but I normally just go to my local pharmacy for it.

Yeah, I see it at the supermarket too, with the health care stuff.

It comes in two concentrations.

Eric

I use denatured alcohol one can find in the paint department at Home Depot or Lowes.

I get my 91% alcohol from Wal-Mart. The one here has two concentrations, 70% (blue label) and 100% (red label). Every once in a while they have one with a green label, 50% I think. Anything under 70% is worthless.

How about a, good old fashion, Walgreen drug store.

Cheers, [D]

Frank

Lowes. But I have not had good luck with the lettering removal using it. Pretty much messed up the whole finish.

For removing lettering I use non-acetone nail polish remover.

Pure 100% ethyl alcohol (Absolute alcohol) is just not avaialble without special federal license. There are three common alcohols. Ethyl - drinking and medicinal, Isopropyl , medicinal, and Methyl (posionous, “wood” alcohol") used almost exclusively for lacquer base and lacquer thinner (old brand was SOLOX)

All alcohols are toxic in one manner or another. Ethanol can’t be distilled much beyond 90% purity and is the alcohol in all drinking liquors. ABC or package stores carry 180 proof “everclear” ethanol that is drinkable if you mix it and has no denaturants added.

Store bought, Ethyl, Iospropyl and Methyl alcohols are all denatured by adding nasty stuff to them to make them undrinkable. Just enough poisonous material is added to make you violently ill if you drink any.

Pure 200 proof 100% alcohol can be made by the user by buying everclear 180 proof at a liquor store and adding anhydrous copper sulfate (Southern States and some hardware store have this - it is also called blue stone or blue vitriol). The copper sulfate you buy will be “hydrous” and is a beautiful and rich gem like blue. (loaded with inter crystalline water). You must put about 4 oz in your oven and heat to about 400 degrees for a bit until it turns snow white (anhydrous). immediately transfer it to the 180 proof alcohol and it will turn blue again. (removing normally undistillable water out of the alcohol and raising the proof towards 200 or 100% absolute ethanol) decant off the alcohol into a tightly sealed bottle. (note- copper sulfate will not dissolve in ethanol) Rebake the copper sulfate and repeat until the copper sulfate not longer turns deep blue. You now have absolute alcohol. Absolute alcohol sucks water out of anything it touches including the air. Always leave tighly sealed until ready to use and then quickly reseal.
