I just got The Allegheny Midland: Lessons Learned today. I was thumbing through it when I happened upon a short section titled Plans for Electrification (page 41).
It seems Tony Koester had plans to string wire and run some serious heavy electric helper service out of Sunrise Yard, north to Altapass! He mentions that he had acquired a stable of heavy electrics to do the job, but his change of eras (one of many!) to the 1970s and 1980s combined with a lack of time to string the wire and such kept the project from coming to fruition.
What a shame…
I wonder if he ever painted any of his electrics into Allegheny Midland colors?
