Along the Winnemucca sub

Last week I was up north and had the chance to follow the Winnemucca sub. from Flannigan to Winnemucca. This is about as remote of a location as you will find on any transcon. mainline (except mabee the ex SP,LA&SL. north of Caliente). It’s 210 miles of dirt road between Wendel,Ca. (on the old Modoc line) and Winnemucca, interupted by 10 miles of pavement through the small town of Gerlach, Nv… Along the way I caught a few trains:

This is UP 8024 west at the summit of Sand Pass, east of the Cal-Nevada state line

Then at Gerlach UP 8100 west was coming into town as I crossed the tracks on hwy 447.

Then about a dozen miles east of Gerlach I encountered this westbound in the Black Rock Desert (home of the famous ‘Burning Man’ festival every year)
