Nice shots Dougal! I visited Altoona on July 27th myself. Got a good drenching while walking around outside the Railroaders Memorial Museum (great museum too, I highly recommend it [tup][tup]). Fortunately after I had lunch and went out to the Curve the rain had pretty much stopped. Made for a nice afternoon of train watching. Would’ve liked to have been there for the 150th Anniversary celebration.
great pics man~!!! i love altoona, althought i havent been there for like a year. i have an aunt that lives there so every time we go back east to visit we stop by, and then hang out and take some train pictures. so many trains go through its great. i have some pics somewhere that i took from that very same briged by the RR memorial museum. great museum too, only thing that saddens me is that they dont have their old HO layout still. that used to be my favorite when i was really young.
I’ve been to Altoona 9 times since '95 and I never get sick of it!

Njmike- Lucky you. We almost stayed at the station Inn, but it was a business trip for my dad, he needed a place with internet and close to his work, so we ended up staying in altoona. Whn you come find the small city of cassandra. THere’s s a viewing platform over the track and defect detectors on both directions so if you have a scanner you’ll know when somethings comming. Wlll gotta get going I have four stops to make it to before w leave at 5.

When I go out there I usually head to Altoona, Slope, Horseshoe, Galitzin, Cresson, and Cassandra, I haven’t stayed at the Station Inn or Tunnel Inn yet but I might someday.
The Tunnel Inn does not turn me on. I think The Station Inn is the best!
Weve been going to The Station Inn for the past 5-6 years. We go there on vacation every August or begining of September. Andrew, I have been to the Cassandra RR overlook before, thats a kool place.
It’s weird hearing people talking about going on vacation to Altoona… I lived right in Altoona for a few years, and lived close to it for many more years, and I can tell you that town is a craphole. It’s nice for a railroader, but as a place to live, no thank you! By the way, one of the years I lived there it was named the fattest city in America. Don’t know where it ranks now that I’ve moved out! Coulda been named the dirtiest city too…
