Good evening all. Tis the season for around the tree displays except here. I pulled out the old (50+ years) Flyer #307 for the first time in at least 4 years and so far its no go. All I’m getting is buzzing and clicking from the unit in the tender that I assume controls forward and reverse movement. I’ve taken emery cloth to the track and pick up wheels on the tender so juice should be flowing. Any of you gray beards have any advice or tricks to get this beast up and moving?

You may want to post your question over in the Classic Toy Trains forum. Those folks will give a better answer. The members that hang out over here model Ho and N scale.
Good luck in finding your answer.
And S, O, G and Z. Maybe even some TT. And one guy is trying to drum up interest in 55n3. There might even be an OO modeler here.
Enjoy
Paul
It’s been a while since I looked at American Flyer but, as you said in your post it is probably the reversing unit. Take the tender shell off and check for loose or broken wires. Put it on a test piece of track and test to see if the thing is stuck in neutral. Look to see if anything can use a drop of oil.

I grew up in the late 1940’s through 1950’s with American Flyer Royal Blue locomotives that had a lever on top of the boiler that could be set to keep the reversing relay in one position or another. If your locomotive is the same, push the lever to the other side and see if that corrects the problem. I don’t remember anything being in the tender of mine, though.
Thanks to all for taking the time to reply. The train is on the workbench and about to be probed with the multimeter. Hopefully up and running soon. I also posted on Toy Trains and received some feedback there so all advice given was useful.
I just remembered that my Dad’s Flyer (NYC Hudson) had the lever you mentioned on the underside of the tender.

I had the same problem as you. Go to this website and click on the “engine diagram”. http://www.rfgco.com/catalog/index.html
Pick your engine and check to make sure the wiring is correct. I bypassed my tender completely and rewired my locomotive. It only goes forward now, but thats all I want. Here are some before and after pics.

After I rewired it…
