Amtak Dash 9

Took Amtrak up to the Sacramento Railroad museum yesterday. (More on the museum in another thread later.) While waiting for my train home,

another Amtrak train pulled in. I have never seen Amtrak running Dash 9’s before. (click thumbnails for larger pictures)

Nice detail photos. The first one appears to be an EMD F59PHI. The 2052 is a GE P32-8WH or Dash 8-32BWH depending on what reference information your read. These are ‘Dash 8’ technology engines, and Amtrak has a small fleet of them. These engines were built in 1991. Walthers has marketed an HO model of the Dash 8-40BW painted in the Amtrak ‘Pepsi Can’ paint scheme. You can still find them on eBay…

Atlas also makes the -832BWH in HO and maybe N painted in the scheme shown in the photos.

So what is the difference between the GE 32-8? and the GE CW44-9? Asthetically they look the same that I can see, with the exception of the window in the nose access door.

The big differences are the size, axles (four vs. six), and horsepower. There are probably numerous differences in the electrical system also.
