Amtrak ads

One thing I’ve noticed when flipping through TRAINS as well as Amtrak schedules is that a lot of times the numbers and “Amtrak” name on Genesis units are missing from some of the pictures, and I’m pretty sure they’re photographs and not just paintings or what not. Does anyone know why Amtrak would do this?

I just leafed through the Amtrak Timetable and the April Trains magazine, all places you should see the Amtrak name and logo, you see it. The only place I’ve seen this is the stylized posters for the name trains, which are obviously drawings. Which ones specifically are you talking about?

“Amtrak” letters on the Genesis locomotives did get small with the “Acela” style paint jobs.

A small “swoosh” on the nose and a larger one on each side has a small word “Amtrak” above it. But the numbers near the rear on the sides is huge.

Okay, after flipping through the 2010/2011 timetable, you’re right, the name and logo are still there. However, even on the front page, the numbers are missing from the sides and nose.

Not sure why, but digital alterations happen a lot in the Amtrak catalogs.

Here are a few of the digitally “enhanced” images I remember seeing over the years.

  • Replaced a heritage baggage car with a Superliner

  • Altered an IV Superliner into an IVb Superliner

  • Removed the road number from a P42

  • Copied a lead P42 and used it as the second unit in the same consist
I’m sure there are lots of others, but this is all I can remember at the moment.

Just got my copy of the newest timetable, the cover photo of the Cardinal is a bit grainy, and there’s glare on the nose numberboard, but it appears more a situation of less-than-perfect photography. Same for the photo of the Empire Builder inside the cover.

I have a copy of a brochure from the mid-70’s promoting the Amtrak Trains in the East, the cover has a GG1 hauled train with the pantographs and catanery airbrushed out. When I first saw that as a young teen I knew at was wrong.

Oh good, i’m not the only one who has seen this in all of their timetables and travel guides. Maybe the numberless P42s are the only locomotives that can be used in their ads since they show up everywhere including places where electric motors run almost exclusively.
