Amtrak, New York reach cost sharing agreement

This news was announced last week… what took so long for the news wire to pick it up? Good on detail… always willing to wait for more info!

Now if we can secure on time running by CSX and CP and capacity enhancements west of Schenectady we may have something on which to build. As things are at present it is hard to be optimistic.

Yea!
I’m heading down Richmond on the 15 and back on the 16!

Now if other states like Ohio & Wisconsin will get on board with support of their Amtrak lines.

Just in time - I’m heading down to NYC the 17th.

As long as those two states that Mr. Phares mentioned keep electing these Neanderthals like Scott Walker and John Casisch with their collective blind hatred for any form of passenger rail. That’s not going to happen. States like New York and California are to be roll models for the rest of this country.

Citizens of New York State pay the highest taxes in the country. For those taxes perhaps we receive good services - but then how come more people leave the state then come here? How come companies choose to locate their factories in lower cost states? I’d rather have lower taxes and more jobs.

My vote is to stop subsidizing Amtrak, raise the ticket price to cover the cost, and let passengers decide if it is worth it. That is what I tell my representatives.

I wish they would get rid of section 209 of the PRIIA. I believe that that Act either has expired or is to expire soon so maybe a new act can exclude such a section At the absolute least, the mileage needs to be cut in half.

It is very import to keep the nations passenger rail service intact and expanding. My compliments to Amtrak and the state of New York for reaching this agreement. Richard M. Roche President / CEO Franklin Railroad Services

Hey Andrew Dickey, let’s not stop at cutting off subsidies for Amtrak. Let’s make the airlines pay for air traffic control, terminals, TCA, etc. Also make the public pay al the costs to maintain our streets and highways as well. Oh, that’s right we pay our , god forbid, taxes to maintain our streets and roads.

Mel & Mo Miller, I usually don’t ever agree with you as you seem to be a left coast neanderthal that has track ballast for brains but I do think you have the right idea here. All modes of transportation should stand on their own and then the public can choose the mode that they prefer without subsidy by any other mode. Nothng wrong with the government operating certain systems if that is the efficient way to go but the full costs have to be charged via taxes, tolls or fares. That way we can see who the winners are.

Is there any way the Lake Shore Limited can benefit from this? If so, since the Lake Shore Limited is the only train with sleeper cars on the Empire State corridor, it would make sense that the Lake Shore be run at night to provide that option on this corridor. The Lake Shore needs to return to its popular daytime schedule it once had between Chicago and Cleveland so both a daytime and night time option can be provided properly on both segments of its east and west of Cleveland, with the Capitol Limited offering the night option west of Cleveland as it does right now. Another option that Amtrak should look into for the Lake Shore Limited if they insist on keeping it on a night schedule between Chicago and Cleveland would be to take advantage of the rebuilt high-speed trackage in Michigan and reroute the train over the Wolverine Corridor west of Toledo. It does not make sense to have both the Capitol Limited and Lake Shore Limited running over the same route at night between Chicago and Toledo.
