Ann Arbor to spend $2.6 million on design for new Amtrak station
$44.5 million dollars seems to be a lot of money for a train station. I’ve caught trains in Ann Arbor before, and while AMTRAK’s business to and from the city is good, I don’t think it warrants a station that costs close to $50,000,000. The old station even with the potential of increasing train frequency appeared to me to be more than adequate.
I hope Ann Arbor puts in place at least two through tracks for boarding and perhaps two more stub tracks. This will aid traffic flow considerably with both Amtrak, commuter trains to Detroit, and freight. There is only a single track at present.
This is great news. This should attract some talented architects from around the world.
Michigan DOT should also plan passenger service between Lansing and Detroit on the CSX line.

I’m with Marvin L Cadwell on blanching at the thought of spending 44.5 million dollars on a train station, but $2.6 million JUST for the design? No wonder the state of Michigan is in financial trouble, if Detroit and other cities spend money so carelessly…
The proposed new station for Ann Arbor is going to be truly an inter-modal facility. Greyhound can finally get out of its rather antiquated location which has had a height problem for some of its buses. The new terminal will also host some city bus service and be home for the taxi dispatcher’s office, as well as the new commuter rail. U-M students who live in suburban areas in Detroit will be able to use the trains to go to/from classes, as well as hundreds of medical staffers and patients at the U-M hospital.
The current station has historical significance. Expand a little, upgrade the exterior to match exactly the original station next door, and don’t change anything else.

Go Blue! Go Ann Arbor! I have ridden the Wolverine many times to and from Ann Arbor and it is time for a modern train station with ample parking. Don’t cut corners or costs on the project, just to please some bean-counters or conservatives. Remember they lost the election.
The Gandy Dancer, which is in the former New York Central depot in Ann Arbor serves fine French cuisine and wines. The Broadway bridge is a great spot to photograph trains from. The new station will only be a short taxi ride from the new location and there will continue to be a city bus line there, as Ann Arbor Transportation Authority does provide bus service over the Broadway bridge.
