Another CN in BC Derailment

Less than 1 hour ago as I write this, 9 grain cars derailed south of Lytton on the CN mainline, at the point they interchange with CP.

This is in addition to the derailment (20 cars)a few days back at the crossing, a CP train running on CN track. 12 coal cars ended up in the river. The bridge should be re-opened this weekend.

Update at 12:00 noon, BC time:

9 cars are off the track (CN mainline), with some of them on the CP mainline. So the mainlines of both Canadian railways are blocked at the same spot.

Grain train goes off the tracks in B.C.#### Last Updated: Friday, August 4, 2006 | 9:30 AM PT##### CBC News

For the second time in less than a week, a train derailed in the Lytton area of B.C.'s Fraser Canyon.

Nine CN Rail cars carrying grain went off the tracks Friday at about 6:45 a.m. PT.

There were no injuries.

CN spokesman Jim Feeny said the accident happened about 10 kilometres south of the village, near a track interchange.

It happened just hours after a Thursday night meeting between Lytton residents and CN officials, with the residents asking what the company is doing to stop the derailments.

Lytton Mayor Chris O’Connor told CBC Radio the latest accident raises more questions about the company’s safety practices.

“It flies in the face of CN’s claim that they have reduced accidents this year, and that they’re practising good maintenance,” he said.

“The message really from our community is that we understand these railways are important. However, it puts the community in jeopardy and we’re going to be the ones left to deal with it.”

O’Connor said Lytton residents just want to stay safe.

A 124-car Canadian Pacific coal train derailed Monday night on a bridge near Lytton.

The derailment happened on the CN-CPR interchange track at Cisco, not on the CN mainline. What do you expect though, CN and CP sending trains up this track that hasn’t been used in 3 or 4 years.

“What do you expect though, CN and CP sending trains up this track that hasn’t been used in 3 or 4 years.” Probably in better shape than the Grimsby Sub that gets used every day. A proud Canadian in the Signal Department of the Canadian National Railways.

No worse than here in Streator couple months ago we had the entire Transcon cut by 11 cars the train was crossing over and one gad a cracked wheel the wheel broke at the frog took out the signals switch controls BOTH mainlines for a length of 1400 feet. They finally got thru putting the yards of the residents back to normal. I ran into a friend of mine who works for the RR and asked where the roadmaster was he goes see the guy with the IV malox there you go.

The CN spokesman on the Kamloops radio station said it was the main line, where it is above the CP main. He also indicated that the cars blocking the CP line rolled down onto the CP line. All I can do is go by what I hear from the local radio. It is always great when someone with better information posts it, thanks.

Apparently the cars derailed while still on CPR trackage, the connector is from what I am told, CPR owned.
