I got the itch to get motivated today for some reason. I remembered that I had a little custom made mining slug I got a while back that had a Hartland Mack power truck under it. So, I set out to make a kinda “flatbed” sorts critter. My wife suggested something in blue this time. Here is what I have so far.
Very nice model. Looks kinda familiar…
…mine is as close to true prototype model as I’ve ever come, based on a M.A.C. gas speeder that was very popular with Pacific Northwest logging railroads for everyday services.
Vic, that’s really cool. Thanks for posting that.
Gee, my workbench doesn’t have a tablecloth! [:-^]
Very nice. I particularly like the color of the wood. I’m gonna go surf for steam critters.
Les
Les, this is my favorite steam critter. Although this is On30, it could be made in large scale no sweat. I got another power truck from a Bachmann 45 tonner, too. I may just take a whack at it. Like I NEED another loco.
Whoa, 'way many thanks for that pix! I’d like permission to try making one similar. [:P]
Getting to see some of the ‘innards’ up close answered a whole slew of ‘how’d they do that’ questions, not the least are the springs. And the piping from the boiler to the cylinders. The rotted lagging is interesting, too.
I cannot bring myself to consider building something like that and not painting it up pretty and clean. Maybe I’ll get over it.
Les
Permission? HA! You don’t need mine. GO FOR IT!!! Here’s another helpful pic:
Okay, I will! Thanks.
How does that valving arrangement operate? Is there any sites where I can find that out? At first glance it appears to go to the brake shoe, but no, it disappears underneath. Lobe on an axle, perhaps? Looks like it’s riding on a jackshaft to work the other valve.
You got me by the short hairs. If you look here: http://www.backwoodsminiatures.com/ you’ll see it in the On30 section, almost at the bottom. You can email them and they will probably send you some detailed drawings…at a cost, I imagine, but it would be worth it.
More progress. This is probably as far as I will go for now. I can keep addin details til the cows come home, and will, but yall get the idea.
One last thing - use brass rod or styrene coated metal rod and add the handrails to those holes in the cab doorways, will go along way to giving it that final finished look.
You better know that’s on the list. I just did all I can do without buyin anything. Wife just lost her job last week, so spendin is OUT of the question.
Where is Jones County? Is in driving distance of Atlanta? My company is hiring like crazy.
You got me by the short hairs, by Gear Driven Steam
You know that there are females that post here too and watch over the forum. So what are short hairs that you refer to.
We’re about 70 miles south of Atlanta, and 25 miles NE of Macon. Lord. I’m not sure they would be willin to pay for that commute. She has one HELL of a resume. She can literally do anything. TONS of management experience. She’s managed over 70 people in several different store locations, ran garden shop/hardware/housewares departments at KMart, she’s still got her forklift permit. She has tons of medical insurance billing/legal/collections experience. She can do it all.
With some of the emails I’ve gotten from you, I’m sure you wouldn’t be in the catagory to be offended, so I wouldn’t worry too much. …and as for what they are…use your imagination. No tellin where THAT’LL take you !!! LOL
Now now Sweet, are you sure ya really wanna know?

Exactly, Vic. that’s what I was referring to. That is an OLD saying. People are just too quick to let their mind wander into the gutter. No surprises here, though.
I have seen your emails to her. And your not a Saint either [:D]
Monk Toad
Well Toad, I don’t know what you think you’ve seen, but I’ve never sent anything inappropriate. You better be careful because I promise you, if she’s shown you something that IS inappropriate and claims it to be from me, you’re being played. Beyond all that, I didn’t start this in the wrong direction. All I wanted to do was share another of my critter buildups. Clearly, that was a mistake. I will keep my builds to myself.
