Am I missing something here is it solid 24kt gold lined or something.
Look at the bids I bet the high bidder put in a mistake in his bidding like he ment $200.00 and by mistake put in $2000.00 as starting bid was $149.95 and the other nut bid him up out of curiosity.
I have two possibilities for the price (it’s $830 right now)…
#1 It includes the original box!!! [(-D] You have to have followed other posts a while back about E-Bay prices being insane to understand. The reason I was given back then was it included the original box. I found that a bit insane, but I guess it justifies it in the minds of collectors.
Us normal poor people don’t display boxes or try and run them on tracks. We just shove them on a shelf until it’s time to put the loco away. Or use them for kindling. [;)]
#2 That loco is equipped with the rare solid gold wheels and frame. Rumor has it Lionel was so happy to have settled the lawsuit with MTH that they made and modified some locos with gold appointments. That may be one of them [:P]
I smell a rat somewhere. Just Trains has this item in stock for sale for $127. There are other online sources with similar prices. Someone would have to be VERY stoopid to pay that price for that loco. Winning bid was $840.
The same guy bid 17 times against himself, all in the last minute! This looks like a schill bidder by the seller to me. I turn these into Ebay when I see them. I bet this same item shows back up on Ebay for sale tomorrow.
As far as crazy goes, I just watched a Stout action selling a Rutlands solid shield box car for $7,900.00!!! It was unused and had the “original box”. Lol! Some fool has a lot more money than sense.
Very fishy bidding history - almost like it was done by a bot - bid goes up by $5 several times, then by $20, by $50 then $100, all in the space of four and a half minutes. Looks like the same person just drove up the price on his own item.
Don’t do much EBaying. Did bid on a Lowrance depth finder for my pond boat [as I am going to take other ones to lake on Ranger]. Was new in the box but had not been manufactured for several years [so no manufacturer’s warranty]. Went for $300. That is almost the original selling price when the unit was current. Can buy a updated better unit for almost that price. [%-)]
I agree there is a rat somewhere. I have the exact same Lionel locomotive and it cost me $129 plus tax and shipping. I bought it maybe eight months ago using mail order.
Yep…that is close to the prices I found online. Doesn’ make any sense that someone would pay an outrageous price for it. It’s not even difficult to locate. Some kind of shady stuff here.
This can’t be right…somebody paid $840 for a non-powered new locomotive that’s worth only $120-$150 brand new? I can’t believe this!
There are, of course, many people out there who bid on something they want, and they’re the only bidder…for a while. Then some other person comes in and starts a bidding war, and they run the price up sky high - at this point, the bidders probably just want to beat the other guy. If this was some rare locomotive from centuries ago, I might understand this, but it’s a new locomotive that’s not rare by any means. He could have bought the engine brand-new for under $200.
A few weeks ago someone paid $540 for an empty outer box from a Lionel steamlocomotive. Not even a special one, I thought it belonged to a 2606 or something. It only had a few stamps on it from which you could tell it’s Lionel, but it was plain brown cardboard, with tape on it and worn edges… Even if it would be the only box in the world, $540 is a huge amount for a piece of cardboard in my opinion.
Daan: While I agree with you 100%, you will find plenty of disagreement on the forum. Especially among “dedicated collectors”. I swear if they put used toilet paper certifiied to be owned by Joshua Cowen on E-Bay there would be a flock of collectors bidding on it. If he were alive today, they’d have to post armed guards around his trash can to keep collectors away [(-D]
But this particular loco selling at this price just doesn’t make any sense at all. It can be easily obtained for a lot less from online train stores, so there would be no reason to pay an exorbitant sum for it. Something is definitely wrong here.
Thats just it, this is not some collectable engine but a common new dummjy that anyone with an LHS or a CTT can buy for $150 or so. I’m figuring this must be some sort of scam from one end or the other…
I have been watching this guys auctions and another guy who uses photos very similary set up like this guy’s are, and both always have 12 to 20 bids on their stuff and always for a very high sell price. Some have told me that they had bid on these auctions and always within five minutes they are always out bid. I just don’t pay any attention to them anymore, very fishy.
