any advice for painting autumn-themed backdrop?

I’m ready to get rolling with my backdrop. the sky-and-clouds part isn’t too hard. Where I’m at a bit of a loss is in painting autumn trees.

The basic techniques I’m using are those shown in Mike Danneman’s article in the 10/2004 issue of Model Railroader. While it provides a lot of good information on hills and evergreens, I need something more, well, Northeastern. Namely, western Pennsylvania.

Any advice on painting a fall foliage backdrop?

Don’t know how you paint it but (looking at exactly the same issue) I realised that with the sun at a low angle one of the things that makes fall trees so different is that the light is coming through them more horizontally… so… as much as looking at the trees we are looking at the light between and through the leaves.
Don’t yet know how to paint this but maybe the idea will help… if you work out the answer please tell us
