Are there any HO GP28 Models &/or 567 non-turbo GPs that are not F & GP7-9 Units?
When setting up my camera & switch ladder video for the Video Camera for Trains thread http://cs.trains.com/TRCCS/forums/t/203252.aspx I realized that I did not have any 4 axle Geeps with sound, so I substituted an Ath Tsunami equipped FP7 as my camera pusher unit.
I usually use the Custom painted & lit Kato GP35 in MRL #410 scheme seen on a tail track, however it is a non sound version, & it is really comfortable switching in this yard, even with some taped down tail tracks, -while I decide to isolate them electronically with a control switch, before permanently mounting them.
While doing research, I found that I would like a sound equipped low nose GP18, GP28 or even a GP38. Honestly the pickens are a little thin, when you look for them in sound.
In the mean time, I have an undec Proto GP18 & am thinking of adding a Tsunami, a boxed oval speaker, & performing major milling on the weights to make it onto a noisy one, & into a more contemporary GP10 type of conversion.
However, the research I have done really got me thinking of a GP28, & interested in that model. From ‘Wiki’ they say only 31 of them were actually built, so they were out there. In addition, I really enjoy th
The information I have says there were actually only 6 GP28s made. With a little slicing and dicing you could convert a GP35 to a GP28.Apperance wise the 28 was basically a 35 with a 38 long hood.
To the best of my knowledge all 6 (5 actually one was wrecked) all ended up on the Illnois Central roster.
According to Kalmbach’s book, “Diesel Locomotives: The First 50 years” by Louis A. Marre (2nd printing, 1999), there were 16 GP28’s delivered to US railroads and another 10 to Mexico from March 1964 to November 1965.
The roster of GP28’s, according to the same book, was:
Illinois Central 9429-9440
Kansas, Oklahoma & Gulf 700-701
Mississippi Central 211
Texas Mexican 856
Chihuahua Pacific 801-810
The only high nose GP28’s were from the Chihuahua Pacific: no.'s 808, 809 and 810, which all had steam generators. GP28’s were also built with and without dynamics.
There were a total of 31 GP28s built. EMD exported five GP28s to Peru for the South Peru Copper operation. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GP28 for the complete roster.
Real GP-28s from EMD most certainly do not look like a GP-35 with a GP-38 long hood.
The GP-28 used the same long hood as the 35 with the exception of having 2 48" fans a bit closer together(without a 36" between them) and have a two exhaust stacks instead of one turbo stack. The side door arrangement is the same. The latch placement is phase dependent.
They were built between 3-1964 and 11-1965. There were no GP38s existant at that time to share a carbody with.
The details phases are similar to the GP-35s.
A LOT more than 6 were made. Total production was 31 units. It was not a hugely popular unit. Essentially a GP-18 in a GP35 carbody whch gave it the improvements that went along with the 35 line.
