Any HO N&W passenger models in all blue paint scheme?

I’m trying to find new HO models of N&W passenger cars (HW or LW) in all blue paint scheme, preferably with gold/yellow lettering. Any suggestions as to vendor/manufacturer?

Thanks,

bump

Dave.

I havent seen N&W passenger cars in the Blue paint scheme. The only N&W scheme that I have seen would be the Red (Tuscan) with gold lettering. It sounds like a custom paint job for you to do!

If ya want to go Wabash well then you will have an blue scheme with a silver roof in AHM/IHC cars.

You also have a couple of Walthers cars in Wabash that are blue.

I know that Concor had some passenger cars out that were N&W, but I think that they were red also.

The blue scheme would be cool I think. Kevin

We have a couple of odd cars we inherited from grandpa. One is marked “The Blue Comet” by Rivarossi, It is a diner HW with kaydee 505 truck mounted couplers and IHC interior, and has kadee? wheels. It is Blue body with dark gray roof and white stripe thru windows. has gold lettering and says “Giacobini” under the centre window. The other car is marked “Lackawanna” by Rivarossi, It is a dome car SS with Kadee 508 truck mounted couplers and IHC interior, It is Red/wine color stripe thru windows with grey sides and black roof. It has kadee wheels. Presently they are in a box with other Rivarossi stuff we are hoping to sell on eBay. Pretty cars but not our roads we model.

Kevin and Sadie,

Thanks for your responses. I was looking for a model blue N&W passenger car based on a prototype photo of an all dark blue N&W passenger car I saw on the back cover of a book, “Norfolk & Western Passenger Service: 1946-1971” by William E. Warden. The caption under the photo reads “P3-class coach No. 537 has just received her coat of blue paint. To those raised on the Tuscan red, this looks improper and maybe even immoral. . . . Still a fine looking car.”

Mr. Warden also states on page 63 that “The original exterior paint scheme for [N&W] was Tuscan red sides and black roofs and trucks. Starting in February 1966, however, both cars and passenger diesels were painted blue - ‘N&W No.23 acrylic blue enamel.’ The gold lettering was preserved. Both cars and engines remained blue until the coming of Amtrak [1971].”

Maybe the N&W colors were changed to better match the blue Wabash cars acquired by N&W in the 1964 merger. Now that I think of it, I doubt if any manufacturer bothered to model a color scheme that lasted only 5 years. So Kevin, it looks like you’re right, I’ll have to custom paint a car to get what I want.

And Sadie, I believe the “Blue Comet” was part of the old Central Railroad of New Jersey (CNJ). Nice railroad and cars but unfortunately I don’t model them. Again, thanks for the info.

Hmm. I know the scheme you mean on engines, but not on cars. Odds are you’ll be matching a ice aircan of blue or warming up your paint brush. IHC might have something in the odd scheme, but even today the N&W cars are back to Tuscan red.

Quickie: Is that really Tuscan? it looks too tomato red to be a Tuscan, but then I have PRR tuscan in mind…

Hi Dave;

AMB Laser Kit offers some N&W passenger car sides:
http://www.laserkit.com/laserkit.htm

Walther’s has one car decorate appropriately for the “blue” era:

Also search:

The blue faded very quickly.

The blue is often caller Pevler Blue after the 10th President of the N&W, who came to the N&W with the 1963 merger.

Personally, I think he almost destroyed the N&W.

Good luck.

Contact Rapido Trains, notice the amount of Railroads they cover

Update: I never got around to painting any cars but MTH just advertised solid blue NW passenger cars in their 2013 HO catalog, availability @March, 2013. http://www.mthtrains.com/sites/default/files/catalog_files/2013_ho_v_1/index.html Really pricey, but I’ll probably get a couple of item #s 80-60040 and -60045 coaches if I can find them discounted. Thanks to all for previous responses.

Update: Just rec’d two new MTH HO solid blue NW passenger cars (80-60040 and -60045) after several delayed release dates. Pricey, but nice. They come with interiors, no flicker lighting, and scale Kadee whisker couplers installed. Best prices I could find were at Model Train Stuff (MB Klein). Original dealer from whom I pre-ordered cars, Bryler Junction, apparently went out of business in @July, 2013 with no warning.

Happy holidays to all!
