I bought a new Lionel trainset and can not get the unit to smoke… any tips. yes the switch is on.
How many drops did you add to unit? BTW: what is the set? Most people do not add enough. It can be “flooded” which takes time to burn off. Engine can be turned over son some will run out if flooded. I usually add about 15 drops to a new engine. If conventional, drops added, put on track in neutral, turn up the voltage. If you want to run, add cars or weight down the cars you have to require higher voltage for running. If none of this works, might be defective.
Also: new starter set engines only smoke when in Forward or Reverse. You will get no smoke in neutral, as kids were burning up their units.

Glad to hear that. Last one I bought was two years ago and it does.
Great set. If you have plenty of fluid in the smoke stack, load it down and run it. If over full, it will take a while to get it to smoke. My last engine like that was a Pensy Flier. Mine did not smoke. Took shell off and found wire was unsoldered. Resoldered and she smokes up a storm. I weight it down and that way the more voltage the better it smokes. Now, unless you like working on trains, I do not suggest you remove the shell. I’d take it back to the store and let them worry with it. Good luck.
Take it behind the woodshed, talk to it seriously and tell it this will put hairs on your chest and get ya lots of girls.
