AND HOW TO REPLACE IT? I SURE WOULD BE OBLIGED. JUST GOT THE ENGINE RUNNING AFTER MAYBE50 YEARS AND THE LIGHTBULB IS BURNT OUT AND I KNOW WHERE I GET SMOKE PILLS SO THAT WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE GRANDKIDS. THANKS AND GOOD RAILROADING
To replace the bulb, pull the boiler front straight out of the boiler. Next, pop the bulb and socket out of the spring clip on the back of the boiler front. Unscrew the bulb . The bulb part number is 1447 and most Lionel parts dealers stock it. After you screw in the new bulb, snap the socket back into the clip then push the boiler front back into the boiler.

Didn’t some of the early turbines have the larger lightbulb with the depression in it to use as the heater element for smoke? The smoke pellet, when dropped in the smokestack, would actually rest on the bulb, in the depression. The heat would melt the pellet and you had your smoke.
For this bulb, once you removed the boiler front, there should be a grey metal housing with two fingers/tabs/tits/whatever you want to call 'em protruding from the front. Put your fingers on these tabs and turn the housing a bit counterclockwise (think mouseball retainer cover for us old farts that still have balls in their computer pointers). The housing and bulb can then be withdrawn from the front of the boiler.

The part number for the smoke lamp bulb is 671-75. Just bought one for my 1946 2020…tony
I didn’t think the smoke bulb was available anymore, except for the second-hand market. Am i wrong about this? I happen to have a small fleet of v.1946 2020s and 671s that all use the smoke bulbs. Thankfully all of the bulbs light, but I’m just waiting for that day.
The smoke lamp bulb was about 4 bucks. they are available, the local lionel dealer stocks them.
