Daniel
I saw ATSF 622 and 687 on seperate trains the other day.
Most unpatched ATSFs are within the 600 series. Many of these engines are being patched now.Last year I saw a lot of these ex-ATSF DASH9s and i’ve seen them again this year and they’re patched.
Get these while there still pure ATSFs even though I can’t stop thinking of how good they will look in H3.[:D]
There is a pair of shop queens, GP30s, in blue and yellow, running aound Houston…used on yard to yard transfers all the time.
They look like they just rolled out of the plant, even the insides are clean and well kept…

The ATSF 687 was leading the QSTDVJ 11 (UP Train symbol - Q = quality manifest ST = Stockton, CA DV = Denver J = trackage right train 11 = 6-11-05) which passed my home June 11th. Here is a photo:

That ATSF 687 doesn’t look like it will be painted soon since it got those new yellow reflectors.
i havent seen any santa fe unpatched units in a while. Dash 9 dash 9 dash 9, that is all you see it sucks, stupid bash 9’s
Yes, a Santa Fe D9-40C came by sandwiched between an NS GP38-2 and an NREX SD60 pulling a westbound intermodal through Berea, Ohio on Saturday. The ATSF was unpatched.
Not exactly sure here what “unpatched” means to a railfan; is it a literal description of rolling stock from fallen flags that hasn’t been messed with? Midafternoon of Thursday, June 9, spotted a fresh-looking Santa Fe loco – classic silver & red with warbonnet – heading up the BN scheduled intermodal run passing thru Rochelle, Illinois. [8D] Got a bad picture of it, my hands were shaking so![8)]
Also if nobody has mentioned it Rochelle has something close to “shop queens,” former BN and Santa Fe helpers, both looking quite clean. The Santa Fe is done in the blue-and-yellow with the “Romany” looking lettering for Sana Fe.
There appear to be pockets of BN and ATSF’dom out there–and sometimes they’re badly needed, it seems. [:p]

I don’t know what you mean by lately but here is #642 at the Denver shops on April 8, 2005. It isn’t patched but carries an orange electrical<?> box cover.
I saw that engine here in Lincoln. Thought it looked a little strange with the orange. We have a lot of blue/yellow and red /silver in the yard. They come and go quite a bit!
Just look on either Trains or the Ft. Madison webcams there are lots & lots of blue/mustard Santa Fe units still operating. [:o)][:p][:D]

Unpatched ATSF units have all but vanished. Most of the 100’s, 500’s, 600’s and others that keep the same number that I’ve seen recently have a very small (barely visible) BNSF stencil under the number.
Beautiful!! Thank you now we have seen photos of TWO seperate
unpatched ATSF Santa Fe units still out on the rails in the year 2005.
By the way “UNPATCHED” means full Santa Fe lettering with
NO BNSF sublettering under the locomotive number on the sides under the cab.
By contrast on the UP it is VERY common to see former SP units in
“patched” paint with the only cab sides and hood areas done as a minimal
patch-repaint job.
This is the quick, easy and cheap way to reletter a unit without going to the
time or expense of a full and complete new paint job covering 100 percent
of the locomotive.
Thank you for posting this question about a great and very historic railroad!

This unit gets around, I saw it on Cajon pass a few weekends ago.
Just saw one go zipping by on the Ft. Madison webcam going WB as the 2nd of a 4 unit consist of a D/stacker [:o)][:p][:)]

I have seen the orange boxes on some of the locomotives passing through Rochelle IL, a few years back. I’m thinking that they are some sort of respirators for the crew, based on infomration painted/stenciled on the sides of the orange boxes. It seemed significant to me at the time, because it was shortly after the tunnel fire in Baltimore MD.
Does anyone know if this is correct?
Thanks!

I saw 613 about two weeks ago, with just the small BNSF under the number and the orange box cover on the side, but it still had Santa Fe blazened across the side, cool to see whether it was an unpatched unit or not. But there are quite a few of the Blue & Gold ones that still putt around the Denver yard and go up and down the Front Range Sub, just not sure if they are “patched” or not, always driving by to quickly.
Sometimes you’ll see a BNSF DASH9 in either H1 or H2 with it’s electrical box in warbonnet scheme. The CN/IC ex-LMSX C40-8Ws(2455-2466) have grey or black electrical boxes.
They must take the boxes from other engines and switch them around.
If you wan’t to see ATSFs without a BNSF patch look for 135,561, many in 600 series and a one(933) in the 900 series. ATSF 135 looks as if it had a BNSF patch at one time but BNSF painted over it with red.ATSF 561 has an orange box and it’s paint is in bad shape but still ATSF. The ATSF 600 series engines are the best looking engines out of most of the ex-ATSF DASH8/DASH9s but are still getting patched. Every ATSF in the 800 series has either been painted or patched. There are very little unpatched ATSFs in the 900 series. As of October 2004 only 3 were(928,933,936) left in the 900 series but a few weeks ago I saw 928 with a BNSF patch and I saw a picture of 936 with a BNSF patch in February.
The orange boxes you are seeing are air conditioners. They are easy to remove and replace, especially for maintenance. The reason they are orange is because they came from a locomotive that had been painted in BNSF orange. I hope this helps.[:)]
