Anyone Model this Alco/Emd Loco?

Limited production during the cold war for use on almost any railroad in the world, in case of a ground war. Couplers could be changed out, it had vacuum and air brakes with wheels that could slid on the axle for the different rail gauge. Alco and Emd made a total of 96.
( MRS1 )

I don’t know of any model production runs of these, but these MRS-1’s made it into private and industrial use, where they would make an interesting addition to a layout. The sign that appears above shows that the unit had been used by the Army Ammunition Plant in Radford, Virginia, where it would have interchanged with the N&W. One of these units was used for a couple years at the scrapyard in Roanoke, Virginia located off of Wonju Street. I think that there was one stored up at Cass, WV for awhile, too.

I doubt one will everbe produced as it is too limited and no major roads ever had one. I saw one years ago in a junk yard in East chicagp Indiana before being scrapped.

Here’s another view of one of these beasties. This one is at the Tennessee Valley Railroad at Chattanooga:

Looks like a scratchbuild or a severe kit-bash! Here are some pictures of one on the Bay Coast RR in Cape Charles, Va.

I took these in May 2009, I imagine that it is still there.

Hi

Do you Guys know, are the units you posted operational? [tup]

Lee

The one in Chattanooga is operational, and is occasionally used for their excursions there.

Beach Bill that’s an older RSD-1, not an MRS-1.

An interesting fact on these units is although ALCO built the units, they did so as a subcontractor to GE.
