When I 1st started serious modeling back in the mid-to-late 50’s I remember getting stuck on 410M paint because of the standard railroad colors. It had a quirky attribute I still remember – being like latex sometimes when I went to remove a gob of paint that went astray. I eventually discovered Floquil which I used until it was discontinued, but still remember the 410M of my youth.
Anyone else remember 410M? Who made it and why was it discontinued? Maybe sales fell off because of Floquil, I’m assuming. Anyway, I’d love to know what anyone thought of 410M and any info about the manufacturer.
I remember it, both the ads in MR and the paint in hobby shops. I don’t remember using it, I wasn’t up to scratch building in those days, and the kits came thru mostly painted, except for the all wood kits like Ambroid. I cannot remember what I used to paint the Ambroid kits.
The 410M paints were very big back then. That was also my early modeling period too. I built a lot of Silver Streak and Ulrich cars in those days and they came with painted sides but mostly naked metal parts everywhere else. I had little experience and never heard of an airbrush so I brush painted everything. I can remember the globs but they seemed to go away with a LOT of shaking. I don’t remember any thinner or thinning the paints. I believe 410M was eventually bought by Ulrich and kept the same name (going by very old memories now).
I don’t know when Floquil came in but when I became aware (Tommy?) I can remember most of the people I new that modeled changed over to it.
