Applying Decals

I decal the same way as error, error with excellent results

I have nothing to add but I sure LEARNED A LOT – I’m bookmarking this thread for future reference, plan to do much more decal application in the near future…

Does anyone have any suggestions for decaling passenger cars. I I have my own methods that I use now, but am always up for new (or old) ideas. I am about to paint and decal another train in which I am again trying to find that perfect “stainless steel” appearance. Thanks in advance.

Great thread on decaling! This is never a step I look forward to doing on any model, but with the above mentioned info, I should be more successful in the future!

Question: I think Micro-set and Micro-sol is just diluted vinegar. The vinegar, or acetic acid, set/conforms the decal I believe. Smell the stuff next time, I wonder if we can make our own?? Any chemists out there??

here is my web page album that I show how to put on decals…be sure to go to TRAINS1 and TRAINS 2 to complete the pictures with explanations ( i ran out of room in TRAINS 1 and had to start a new album[:D])…click the “next” button to see all the pictures… http://community.webshots.com/photo/137793353/321880395nqNfFx chuck

Nice tips, guys!

I hope that the newbies here download or print up this thread! [4:-)][tup]

My two cents: Microsol and Microset have been around for years and are still good products for applying decals.

One trick that modelers can perform when laying a decal that is a long stripe: [;)]

Place a strip of 1/4" or narrower 3M “Fine Line” Tape right at the bottom line of where the decal stripe will be. Stretch it tightly. After installing the tape you will be able to tell whether your line is “truly horizontal” or it varies slightly up or down (I’ve had this happen to me).

Next, when you apply the decal, make sure that the bottom of the decal butts up to the top of the 3M tape. If you’re satisfied, CAREFULLY peel the tape off and the stripe should be as straight as the Powhattan Arrow!

Hope this helps! [;)]

Antonio - thanks, that’s a great tip. I’m modeling the New Haven in '48 and they loved their stripes! I’ll be using that one. Randy
