I would imagine it’s real easy for us outside the company to lament the demise of the all alco stable, but I can’t help but think the guys and gals working on and with them are pretty excited about updating some 50 or 60 years worth. I bet none of those chasing the old alcos were doing it in a '59 Studebaker…
Even as a former Arkansas resident, I never made it to the A&M. Time to go!
Tony Hannold sold the railroad in 2002. I have seen the new paint scheme and it is great! Even more reason to go chase.
A&M was not always an all-ALCO road. When we started operations 26 years ago, leased EMD SD40’s were used on the hill. Those units were returned to Chrome Crankshaft after we had a sufficient number of C420’s to handle the Fort Smith turn.
Tony Hannold is sill very much alive. He sold his majority interest in the A&M to Reilly’s group and retired to Virginia. Randy Hannold remains a shareholder in the company.
Yup. Time to head down old Rt. 66 and spend a couple days fighting the ticks to get some good Alco shots.
Progress, I guess. Another bit of railroad history soon to go by the wayside.
had many wonderful chases and trips with the ALCO’s…now this is a good reason NOT to return. doggone chevys.
I’m surprised i didn’t think the Arkansas and Missouri railroad would buying emd sd70aces i hope the alco diesels find some new homes

The A&M main line runs over the old Frisco bridge right outside my window here at the office. I’m really going to miss seeing the train come in heavy with seven alcos at the head all pulling hard.
i cant wait to see how those ACEs will look with the new paint!
EMD? New paint scheme?? Consecutive numbers??? (used to be only a non-MU-equipped unit would get an odd number).
Did Tony Hannold die?
that’s right it sounds like if you wanna see ALCos in the Ozarks the time is NOW.!
Don’t complain about the new paint scheme until you see it. The painting diagrams look real sharp on the EMD.
My entusiasm wained when I read the A&M livery would be replaced with something more “modern.” The current scheme is hard to beat. Hope we don’t get an “SPSF” scheme out of the deal!
I think the new scheme needs to include mandarin orange and white in a nifty horizontal format with a coonskin logo!
I am still hoping to see the Caterpillar painted locomotive before it gets repainted. It was in Peoria at the opening of Caterpillar’s Visitor Center, but this was not announced in advance and I wasn’t there.
I wonder if NRHS knows A&M won’t be all Alco when the convention is there next June. What will this mean for the excursion operation and NRHS’s planned trips?
