athearn ballast hoppers

How do I remove the load from the athearn ballast hoppers?

I have two methods, first is to turn the car over and then slap it in your hand, this should knock it out… if it is in there good, very gently pry it out with a knife. Once you get it out the first time it should be easy after that.

Yes I have the exactrail coal hoppers, and they are the same way, it’s a very tight fit. I’m trying to figure out how to loosen it up, so I can glue a magnet to the load, so I can use another magnet to easily pop them out without picking the car up.

Michael:

Rather than gluing a magnet to the load you can use a large steel washer. It’s a little cheaper and works well.

Joe

That wouldn’t look very realistic??

They are talking about putting the magnet/washer under the plastic coal load where it is not seen, not on the top of the load.

Accurail makes their coal loads with slots under the coal load where you can apply two steel balls ( 12 coal loads and 24 steel balls to the pkg. ) which works very well with a magnet lifting the load off the car. I’ve six of them, works well.

WOW!!! I’m sure glad you clarified that for me, otherwise, well, you know…
