Athearn Headlite Bracket Help

I have a SDP45 and the bracket keeps comming off. It has the little nub that the bracket hole fits over. If I could get in there with a hammer to mushroom the nub would be great. Solder won’t work, soooooooo how do I get this to stay on? Thanks

Three words. E Pox E. Be sure to clean first.

Doesn’t that headlight set-up require that the bracket be grounded to the frame of the loco? Chances are, epoxy will act as an insulator. [;)]

That’s right. Some people just don’t get it do they? Then again, I could just solder a wire to the bracket and ground it to the frame somewhere. Time to do some thinking. Anybody else?

You durn tootin it would. I forgot. Drill and tap from the outside then. Or use epoxy with steel or aluminum in it.

Can you support the frame from the bottom? If you can, then you can put a drift pin against the nub from the top and whack the top of the drift pin with your hammer. If you don’t know what a drift pin is, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drift_pin (It is something like a nail set but with a larger business end)

Back in the days when I still ran diesels and cared that they had working headlights (nowadays, I deliberately remove the lights from all locos) I recall tightening that connection. Simply remove the front truck and front coupler, assemble the bracket onto the nub, then use a hammer to tap the middle of the nub with a centre punch. Obviously, the end of the frame needs to be against something solid - the top of your workbench or the heel of a vise works well, with the frame standing on-end. It still might be a good idea to add a separate ground wire, though.

I tried that but my stuff might be to big for HO though, plus I didn’t take the front truck off either. Call me lazy if need be, it could be easier without it in the way. If push comes to shove, I’ll do Dr. Wayne and expxy and a ground wire. Thanks
