Athearn reefer article

Hello,

I have been looking for an article about upgrading Athearn reefers with a detail that simulated the pull out pully that was used to attach a small motor that would keep the fans circulating the cold air when the car was standing still. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

P.S. this was a magazine article. I think from the mid to late 90s. I cannot remember which publication I saw it in…

Here is a searchable magazine index.

Hi ericsp. I have already tried multiple search engines and multiple phrases in those search engines without any luck. I was hoping some of the longtime model railroaders on the forum would recall this particular article. I know It’s out there somewhere, I just can’t for the life of me remember where.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Is it possible that the info you seek was part of a larger article on, say, buliding a Santa Fe Steel Ice Reefer or some-such? I remember various discussions over the years concerning such reefers (obviously Mech Reefers wouldn’t need such an item).
I do recall in some RMC articles, full shots of an On/Off panel holding a lever that controlled the pullyd operation, perhaps that lead to one of their modeling articles (they often around the turn of the century would have a 2-parter - first month, discuss the prototype, second month, how to model it). Do you have any images - in which case it shouldn’t be that rough to model it by eyeballing and scratchbuilding.

There are three Yahoo groups that discuss refrigerator cars shipment of meat and produce and modeling of them. Go on Yahoo groups and search for them

You do have to join them to look at their posts but there is a lot of info there.
