Athearn Special Edition Releases

Over the years I have purchsed 3 or 4 of the Athearn Special Edition series as they fit what I am trying to do. To date they are unbuilt in the boxes. The railroad is now to the point I can use more cars and from what I have seen these things aren’t increasing in value so I may as well run them. Any thoughts?

Thats what I do. I purchaed most of the ones for western railroads. (The Tropicana Juice Train cars being the only eastern ones.) I bought them to run the wheels off of them, then rebuild them and do it again.

I have the IHB set…I use these locomotives at the club from time to time especially the SW1500.[:D]

I have three locomotive sets myself.

The St Lawrence & Hudson SD40-2’s, the C&NW SD40-2s & the Conrail Philly Division
GP38-2 & SW1000.
I don’t think I’ll run the wheels off of them but they do & will get used quite a bit.

I plan to get more when & if I can afford them, but they’re not a priority on my list of things to get.

Putting them in operation shouldn’t hurt thier market value. Just be sure to keep the boxes. Historically speaking, the value is in having the original box to match the item. Athearn demand went way up when the rumor got out about discontinuing the Blue Box kits. The prices are finally leveling out now and in some cases back to a reasonable range.
