athearn trainset f7 differences

got a coca/c set in dec and made some wiring changes to the loco(removed the strip from the motor)this loco has the newer drive train and the gold clad motor and is very quite and runs very well.got a john/d set the other day and noticed when i took off the shell the loco had a different motor(looks similiar to the old atlas/roco motor).the two flywheels were a little smaller as this motor is longer than the gold clad motor.the factory also grounded this newer motor via a cooper L shape strap which was screwed to the frame and then had a good sized wire soldered to it.it to came with the newer drive train.after a couple of hours running the loco ran extremely well and was very quite.wonder if any of the RTR loco’s are using this different motor?

I got an Athearn Warbonnet trainset for Christmas and the F7 that came with it also had this different motor. It’s about 8 or 10 times more powerful than an Athearn gold motor, but is actually much cheaper. I believe it was made by Mabuchi. The armature is 3-pole and skewed, making it not quite as good as the Athearn 5-pole skewed motor. But it does draw lower current.[:)]

mine sure does creep nicely especially with the mrc CM20.even the cheap power pack that came with the JD set the loco will creep very nicely.didn’t know it was a 3 pole armature.thanks.

LOOK at the shell. If it has 'boiler vent’s on the A unit it’s the 50 year old BB shell, and (probably) SAME drive. Why should you care what motor is being used? - as long as it runs. Have fun.

not even talking about the shell don.yes im having fun with trains, have since 1965.read my post again.the post was about different motors in the very same f7 loco’s.im very familiar with the athearn shells, drives etc etc they have used over the years.have a great evening.terry…
