Athearn RTR’s are by far the best in their price range
2/3 My locomotive roster is athearn, and they are my preferred brand of motive power. However since they are no longer in the walthers catalog, I doubt my ability to be able to aquire them.
Rebuilding Athearn Locomotives is fun and am constantly on the search for such projects.

I haven’t really noticed too many Athearn threads. But I can say over 75% of my cars and 100% of my engines (that still run) are Athearn. I love them. Bet bang for the buck that I have found.
I think RTR is one of the best models around today. ( for relatively cheap)
75% of my motive power is Athearn, some run good and quiet some are noisy as a hungry 6 month old baby. My rolling stock is about 50% athearn. I like RTR but a little to expensive concidering what else is out there. One complaint is I bought some 89 ft box cars 2 walthers and 3 athearns. the Athearns are not as good as the walthers. the walthers stay coupled because the swing coupler brackets are better, the Athearns are flimsy and have to much play in them. The walthers were cheaper also. I can fix the Athearn cars but they were brand new when I bought them and I did’nt expect a problem with all three right out of the box
