I have a atlas 8-40c loco.(pic below). I find it does not seem to pull alot of cars compared to my other engines. I have a Bachman GP38 that will pull twice as much. Its alot smaller engine. What makes them haul differently. Is ther anyway I can make the dash 8 haul more.
Yes. Add weight to the Dash 8. The heavier they are, the more they pull.
But will this take away from what it will pull?
If you haven’t run the engine for very long, then just keep running it. The slippery nickel-silver plating will wear off, and then it should have much better traction.[:D]
There’s your answer.
Mine will pull better than my SD (6-axle) locos. Well, it would until I filled the snoot and the top of my SD40-2 Kato with #9 lead shot. I haven’t gotten to run it since then, it’s probably dry by now and I want to see how it’ll do. Anyway, like they said earlier it might just take some break-in time, and a little weight never hurts either. It’ll increase your power a lot, and if you’re on DCC it shouldn’t lower your pulling capacity much at all, they’ll spin the wheels before they bog down. That’s what makes Atlas and Kato better than the rest.
