Atlas help

I need a replacement motor for an old Atlas SD24 (Part No. 700100)

Atlas doesn’t have them anymore, and I would like to replace it without paying $30.00+ for a motor. The old engine is not worth spending that much on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Steve

Look for one on eBay. They have a search function where you can list your wants, they will advise you if one comes up on auction. The other option would be to try and find one at a local train show. I’m assuming you didn’t check with NWSL to see if they have replacements? Or would they be too costly?

You could also try asking Bachmann if the can motor from their newer GP40/GP50/FT is available as a spare part. These are in fact very nice can motors - they’re quiet and will run at very low speeds. Fitting flywheels might be tricky and you may find the driveshafts aren’t long enough (both can be fixed - they use the same motor with flywheels in their British diesels), but they must be very cheap indeed if they can offer them in a £20 loco!

Steve;

Try ConCor, they got the SD24 from Roco after Atlas was done with it. The same motor was used in the original version of the Atlas turntable, the SD35, GP38, and GP40.

steel,

I just purchased one on Ebay with the motor mounts for $7.00, do a basic search using the word “motors”. The one I got was brand new in the package, with the mounts included. Try Concor to, they may have it.

Once upon a time I used to purchase Atlas turntable power kits, which contained the same motor you need, for less than the cost of an Atlas replacement motor! Then Atlas got wise or ran out of Roco motors and cheapened the motor in the turntable kit. You could try to find an older kit at a show and verify it has the correct motor before you purchase it. Make sure it looks new. When one of these begins to fail it is almost always a shorted winding in the armature. The motor will run very hot, top speed is reduced and current draw is increased. Epay is another possibility. You could also contact Con-Cor and see what they have. The problem with that is they charge a flat fee of $9.00 S/H. Add in the motor and you are probably at or above your $30. If you go this route, tell them you have 2 screw holes in the bottom of the frame because they did a second run later on with Roco, which used a totally different motor, frame and trucks. That one had 1 screw hole in the bottom of the frame. I have been using the Proto Power West / A-line Mashima 1833 (40321) motor in the GP38/40 SD24/35 FP7 locos for a long time. With the trucks cleaned and lubed, the Mashima will provide near Kato performance. Everyone talks about what a great repower kit the Mashima does in the Athearn engines. It does just as well in the old Atlas/Con-Cor. You do not need the kit with the flywheels. The original ones will fit the new motor. The best price I have seen is $25-28 without S/H.

Thanks all. Looked at the Concor and Aline web sites. They will do as a last resort.

ICRR1964, I looked at 97 pages of hobby motors on Ebay and didn’t find anything. Could you give me the name of your supplier? Email mlteel@cox.net

Thanks again for all your help.

LOL! steel, you need to go to the TOYS & HOBBIES, MODEL RAILROAD TRAINS, then HO, should be about 30,000 items in HO, type in the word “motors” in the search feild then.

The vender I got the motor from was just selling off some of his used and new parts he had sitting around. They don’t pop up very often, but just check it every few days on this search, you may land one. Also type in the word “parts” this might get you a hit to. If you don’t find one I would just spend the money on the the Proto Power west item Soo Line covered, this is a great motor and preforms good.

Someone mentioned that the same motor was used in the Atlas turntable.

Here is a link to an auction for one going on now

Thanks to all of you forum members who helped. By taking me by the hand and leading me thru the maze, I found some on Ebay.

Thanks again.

Glad we could help and thanks for letting us know how it turned out. It seems like a lot of people ask for help and then you never hear of a resolution to their problem.
