Has anyone at Model Railroader received any official word from the folks at Atlas? Their web site is currently down and with their location being close to NYC, I’m hoping all of the good folks at Atlas made it through the storm safe?
I would suspect that it’s going to be a VERY long time before things in the NYC/NJ area will get even remotely close to normal. The extent of the damage is still unfolding. As of this AM, there are 8.5 million homes & businesses still without power on the eastern seaboard. Just because of the sheer scope of that, it’s going to be WEEKS just to restore power alone. Internet servers are down & even cell phone communication very spotty. And then there’s the infrastructure damage, which is mind boggling. It was reported this AM that just to get the water out of the tunnels & subway system will take close to a month! And underneath all that water there is surely massive damage to electrical systems, rail lines, road systems etc. Much of it will likely need to be rebuilt from the ground up.
I would not expect Atlas to be back on line, up & running as normal, for some time to come.
I’ll agree that it’ll be a long time before “normal” becomes a common word again along Sandy’s path.
However, I suspect the websites affected will, in many cases, be back soon. There is plenty of capacity sitting idle on the internet. It does take some time to determine what the anticipated time scope of the interruption will be, locate alternative server resources, and up load backups. I presume Atlas has taken the basic steps needed for any business that wants to limit interruption to business and has multiple backups located elsewhere.
There’s also the issue of personnel. If your tech guy is waiting for the water to go down and all the local cell sites are off the air, it’s different then if they were someplace where they can log on and do what’s needed. Obviously, too, the first steps are securing life and health and I would hope that any company puts that first. It’s only two days later, but things should start happening soon for those websites taken down in the storm. I know many that I saw affected are back online already.
