Aug map - Ohio State4th in total route miles....what are top 3 States???

I found August Trains Mag Map of the Month very interesting [:)], comparing railroad routes in Ohio, between 1946 and 2006. Bill Metzger mentioned in his article that Ohio is now ranked fourth in total route mileage. What would be the top three states for total route mileage? [:)] [;)]

// Guessing here: TX, PA, IL? or does KS slide in there?

I would guess the other three to be Texas(#1), Illinois (#2?) and Indiana?

My two cents would be Il.,N.Y., and Pa.

#1 Texas, 10,246
#2 Illinois, 7,338
#3 California, 5,796
#4 Ohio, 5,179
#5 Pennsylvania, 5,060
#6 Kansas, 4,936
#7 Georgia, 4,779
#8 Minnesota, 4,589
#9 Indiana, 4,192
#10 Missouri, 4,122

Stats are for 2004 per AAR

Thanks 1435mm ! [tup] [:)] Especially for giving us the top 10! I was guessing Texas and California would be in the top three, but didn’t realise Indiana would be down at #9. Quite a jump (just under 3,000 miles) from TX down to IL…

Predicting the BOTTOM 10 is even harder. OK, well, Hawaii is easy. But some of the other bottom 10 are not easy to predict.

OK, what I did was take the AAR miles and adjust them by each state’s area:
State Mileage (in PDF format)
The first 10 are all in the East.

2004 AAR vs 1967-68-

#1 Texas, 10,246…#1- 14,051
#2 Illinois, 7,338…#2- 10,928
#3 California, 5,796…#8- 7,485
#4 Ohio, 5,179…#5- 8,031
#5 Pennsylvania, 5,060…#3- 8,477
#6 Kansas, 4,936…#7- 7,871
#7 Georgia, 4,779…#16- 5,474
#8 Minnesota, 4,589…#6- 7,990
#9 Indiana, 4,192…#9- 6,488
#10 Missouri, 4,122…#10- 6,414

Stats are for 2004 per AAR

1967 or 1968 top 10- TX, IL, PA, IA, OH, MN, KS, CA, IN, MO

Where does Iowa stand now? I know that that staate has lost a lot of route miles since 1968.

Thanks,
