I’m about to decal a bunch of 50/55 ton hoppers for B&O. I have both Athearn offset side and Accurail ribbed side. I looked up the length, capy. and cu.ft. with emphasis on cu.ft. but cant’t figure out what number series would be appropriate for each style car. Can anybody help?
According to the NEB&W website, the B&O had the second largest hopper roster next to the PRR. They had 18,000 of the Athearn-type hoppers alone! From the website, these are the B&O number series that (in general) match the cars you’ve got:
Accurail USRA ribbed twin hopper:
5000-5459
233100-233699
320000-320999
321000-321599
321600-321899
324000-324999
426000-426299
726000-726798
Athearn short taper offset side twin hopper:
534000-534999
636000-637999
640000-640999
820000-824999
825000-828999
234000-235399
427000-429999
636000-640999
727000-730299
732000-732499
50000-52999
950000-952999
129000-135499
929000-935499
If you need to see exactly what the various B&O hoppers looked like, the NEB&W website has photos of at least a dozen cars. http://railroad.union.rpi.edu
