I have a question that even after a google search I can’t seem to find the answer, did B&O cabooses in pool service mean pooled with other railroads or pooled only on the B&O? The answers I found in my search never really gave me a definitive answer. I don’t model the B&O but sure like the looks of the new N scale FVM wagon tops in the blue pool service scheme and wondered if they could have pooled on the IC or MP?
As far as I understand it, they were in the freight pool, and rather than being assigned to a single conductor and crew, would be assigned to a train after servicing; in other words, rather than a crew being assigned to a train, and then having “their” caboose tacked onto the end of the train when it was assembled, whatever caboose was next available from the pool would be used.
Ralph, for additional info on the “pool service” as well as any other question relating to the B&O, might I suggest going/ joining the B&O Yahoo group. Ther you will find the most knowlegable people on all aspects of the RR.
Greg and BOgp40, thank you both for your replies. I know once in Evansville,In. I saw a Santa Fe caboose on the end of a Conrail local, but that is the only time I saw something like that. When I saw painted in"pool service blue and yellow" I was wondering if caboose pooling between railroads or the B&O was common. Thanks again, Ralph
